FDJ and Barrière to launch poker site

French lottery and sports betting monopoly Française des Jeux (FDJ) and the casino group Barrière have joined forces to launch an online poker site. The agreement was ratified last week, according to the daily newspaper Le Figaro.

Although FDJ announced a licensing agreement for online poker with California-based software developer Cyber Arts in May 2009, the FDJ-Barrière tie is very likely the result of political pressure from the French authorities, who are keen to ensure one of its major casino operators is not left behind in the online poker boom that is expected once regulation of the French online gaming market takes effect this year.

The Greek lottery systems provider Intralot recently took a 35% stake in Cyber Arts and might have been expected to be unhappy at losing such a major client so soon after signing the deal with the US software firm. However, iGaming France has learned that the Greek company sees the FDJ-Barrière deal as a positive, because it does not believe Barrière’s technology, much of which will be based on the 3D-casino technology it uses for Lecroupier.com, is strong enough to be be able to deal with online poker on the scale that is expected in the French regulated market. The agreement has also not been met with support from FDJ’s own internal teams.

The agreement between the two French gambling giants will see FDJ benefit exclusively from the Barrière casino estate for poker tournaments. With its world-renowned Deauville casino hosting the French leg of PokerStars’s European Poker Tour at the end of this month, it may mean the Isle of Man-based poker site will have to find a different venue for the 2011 French edition of its tour.
