Unibet s’interroge sur une licence française

Dans un entretien accordé à nos confrères de eGaming Review à Londres, le PDG d’Unibet, Petter Nylander a déclaré : « L’ouverture du marché français est une note positive, mais nous nous interrogeons toujours sur la pertinence d’une licence pour offrir nos services aux français » (NDLR : étant déjà licéncié à Malte). Cela positionne Unibet radicalement à l’opposé des positions prises par Betclic (Mangas Gaming / Stephane Courbit/SBM) et l’autrichien Bwin.

Unibet ‘still undecided’ on French licence

Unibet, one of the leading sports betting operators in France, has told eGaming Review that it is still undecided whether it will obtain a French licence when French licences are made available in September.

Unibet chief executive Petter Nylander said: “The opening of the French market is positive but we are still assessing whether we will get an operating licence to offer our products to French citizens.”

The move sets Unibet apart from rivals Bwin and Betclick, the other big sports betting operators targeting the French market, who have made it clear they will acquire a licence to operate in France despite their opposition to the form of the regulation that will be imposed, which is seen as restrictive.

Unibet’s head of marketing for Western Europe, Christophe Dhaisne, added that the French regulation would “mean we have to change our entire business model to work within the set parameters. This brings up issues related to the group’s strategy and the products we offer in other markets.”

However as reported on EGRmagazine.com yesterday, Unibet has signed a number of sponsorship deals in France recently in common with rivals (more). This implies that its reluctance to confirm it will obtain a licence may be a strategic play, intended to influence public debate or policy through the European Gaming and Betting Association.
